La Nopalera

For Hector

This page is how you rebuild the Richmond Hill menu screens. Work from the top. Each lesson ends with a Next button.

The two screens

There are two menus for the TV in Richmond Hill. They show the same dishes and the same prices. Both are silent. Both move themselves, one section at a time.

The HyperFrames screen keeps the type large. The title rises, a brass line draws under it, the dishes step in, and the food photo opens inside a brass frame on the plaster wall.

The Three.js screen is a lit wall with a brass picture light over the frame. The food photo stays clear. When the section changes, the frame comes off the wall, turns all the way around, and the next photo is on the other side.

Open either link on the computer that is plugged into the TV. Lesson 8 tells you how to make it fill the screen.

Open Grok Build

Grok Build is the program that edits this project. It runs inside Terminal. It is not the Grok website, and it is not the Grok Bot app.

  1. Press the Command key and the space bar together. The Spotlight box opens.
  2. Type Terminal and press Return. A window opens with a blinking cursor.
  3. Click in that window. Paste the next line, then press Return.
cd "/Volumes/Coding-Environment/Grok/La Nopalera (Grok) Oct 2026"
  1. Paste the next line and press Return.
grok

The first time, a browser page opens and asks you to sign in. Sign in, then click the Terminal window again.

If Terminal says command not found, paste this and press Return, then type grok again.

export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

You are in the right place when the prompt is waiting at the bottom of a full-screen conversation. Type /quit and press Return when you want to leave.

Give Grok the PowerPoint

Grok cannot see a file until you point at it. The menu file is about 135 MB, named La NopNew2026 menu 10-14-2026.pptx.

Do this once, then you can skip it on later visits if the file is already in the project.

  1. Open Finder. Press Command and space, type Downloads, and press Return.
  2. Find the PowerPoint. Click it once. Press Command-C to copy it.
  3. In Finder, choose Go, then Go to Folder. Paste this path and press Return.
/Volumes/Coding-Environment/Grok/La Nopalera (Grok) Oct 2026/menu/inbox
  1. Press Command-V. The PowerPoint lands in that folder.
  2. Go back to Terminal, where Grok is open. Click the typing area at the bottom.
  3. Type the @ symbol. Type inbox. A list appears. Click the PowerPoint.

You should see the file name in the message before you send anything. That means Grok has the file.

If the @ list does not show it, drag the PowerPoint from Finder onto the Terminal window. Mac inserts the full path. Leave that path at the start of your message.

On this computer the original file also lives here, if Downloads is easier:

/Volumes/2TBSSD/hectorir/Downloads/La NopNew2026 menu 10-14-2026.pptx

Paste the master prompt

A prompt is the message you type to Grok. This one tells it to rebuild both screens the same way they were built the first time. Attach the PowerPoint first, then paste this under it, then press Return.

Grok will edit files and run commands. Let it finish. When it offers links, open them and look at the prices.

Use lesson 5 when you want your own colors or you want a section left out. That lesson fills this same prompt with your notes.

Your own look

Fill this in, then copy the prompt it builds. Paste that prompt into Grok after the @ file, the same way as lesson 4.

Check a section to leave it out of the loop.

Change a price

You do not have to edit the code. Open Grok the way lesson 2 shows, then type a plain sentence.

Use /la-nopalera-menu. Change carne asada to 16.99. Rebuild both screens and deploy them.

Swap in the real dish and the real price. Grok writes the number into menu/menu.json, rebuilds both screens, and records the change.

To add a photo, put the picture file in menu/photos, then say which section should use it:

Use /la-nopalera-menu. Use the new file menu/photos/fajita-sunday.jpg on the Fajitas board. Rebuild both screens.

Prices live in menu/menu.json. You can open that file and look. A missing comma will break the screens, so the sentence to Grok is the safer edit.

The menu skill

A skill is a saved set of instructions Grok follows when the job matches. This project has one named la-nopalera-menu. It knows the two screens, the menu file, and the rule that a price must come from you.

  1. Open Grok in this project, the way lesson 2 shows.
  2. In the typing area, type /la-nopalera-menu and press Return. You can also type the slash, then pick the name from the list.
  3. On the next lines, say what you want. Colors, a new photo, a price, a section to hide.
  4. Press Return and wait until it stops.

The skill file is in this project at .grok/skills/la-nopalera-menu/SKILL.md. It loads because you started Grok inside this folder. If you start Grok in some other folder, it will not see the skill.

Play it on the TV

  1. On the computer connected to the TV, open Chrome or Safari.
  2. Paste the Three.js link from lesson 1. If the picture stutters, use the HyperFrames link instead. The words and prices are the same.
  3. Press Control, Command, and F together. The browser fills the screen.
  4. Leave the volume at zero. These screens do not have sound.

Space pauses. The right arrow skips to the next section. The left arrow goes back. The letter F also fills the screen. Click the photograph on the Three.js screen to skip ahead. The frame comes forward and turns to the next section.

Leave the browser open. The menu repeats. To stop, press Control, Command, and F again, then close the window.

Lunch still appears in the all-day loop. The lunch boards say 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Friday and Saturday specials say so on their own board.
